THE CHIMNEY / SMOKING DUCT
The terminology is important. According to the legislation
• for CANNA FUMARIA means the discharge of flue gas into the atmosphere of appliances fueled by liquid and / or gaseous fuel.
• Instead, as far as biomasses (wood, pellets, wood chips) are concerned, it is mandatory to talk about CAMINO / CONDTOTO FUMARIO (UNI 10683) which can be of two types:
- in metal (UNI EN 1856-1-2)
- in ceramic refractory (UNI EN 13063 -1)
THE CHIMNEY / SMOKE DUCT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT COMPONENT IN THE PROJECT OF THE HEATING SYSTEM (UNI EN 1443 Chimneys general requirements), whether it is a stove, (UNI EN 13240 - UNI EN 15250 - UNI EN 15544), a pellet stove (UNI EN 14785), or a fireplace that also produces domestic hot water (UNI EN 13229 - UNI EN 12815).

DESIGN
Its design and construction must be entrusted exclusively to operators authorized according to the Ministerial Decree January 22, 2008 No. 37 art. 3- 4
and following.
Only the smoker, the chimney sweep, the maintenance technician and the qualified installer can issue the Declaration of Conformity of the Plant to the Rule of the Art: this means that it takes on civil and penal responsibility for what is installed assuming the responsibilities that belong to it.
So be wary of anyone offering services without having the qualifications, without compliance with regulations and legislation: your safety and the safety of your home is worth much more!
The CE marking of the product by the manufacturer is fundamental, from which the smoker starts to build the entire plant. Often the claim of self-construction thinks that the producer's product sheet is the pass to be in order.
Nothing could be more wrong: it is only the first piece of a project that the professional must certify.
Each appliance, a heat generator, corresponds to a suitable chimney / flue pipe: it is not the same thing to design and size a chimney that is connected to an open fireplace or a thermocooker.
They change materials, insulators, final designations, requirements regarding use and maintenance.
Commonly it is trivialized on the exhaust of the fumes meaning a chimney / duct as an overlap of overlapping pipe pieces. It is not so!
Besides the analysis of the generator that determines the choice of the conduit, other elements contribute to define a healthy project.

IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS IN DESIGN PHASE:
- the power of the generator indicated by the manufacturer if it is an industrial product and its type, or declared by the builder, in the case of construction of stoves and storage fireplaces built on site;
- the relevant legislation regarding the type of fireplace used;
- the temperature class;
- corrosion resistance;
- dry or wet operation;
- the type of fuel allowed for that duct;
- resistance to fire from soot or less;
- distance from flammable materials.
These are some of the MANDATORY data to be reported on the CAMINO PLATE or TARGA FUMI which is, in a nutshell, the identity card of what is installed, with the indications of its manufacturer and the recommendation / prohibition of tampering or removal of the same (UNI 10683) .
SAFETY
Particular attention must be given to the SICUREZZA: the crossing of wooden roof and pitches and other highly inflammable insulating materials
are one of the most delicate and important aspects of the project.
It is not sufficient to directly isolate the sensitive spot with mineral fiber cups or mattresses commonly sold by the DIY warehouse or DIY hardware center.
In the event of a fire due to an incorrect installation of a smoke duct, how much does the rebuilding of a wooden roof complete with insulation and roofing, without considering the complications to the underlying premises with loss of furniture and other assets of the building?
Certainly much more than the cost incurred for a correct supply and installation performed by a professional, who, as such, assumes the burden of his work and with his signature takes responsibility for what has been achieved.
